WORD OF CAUTION!

A FINAL WORD OF CAUTION

Frame building is an art, unless, of course, it is a robotic assembly line building the frame sets, in question.  If building a frame set is indeed an art, then repairing one should also fall into the same exalted category.  To straighten a frame set, one must know what they are doing!  If you do not have the skills, knowledge and resources to do the job, leave such repairs to the guys at the local bicycle shop.  And that probably the best frame repair that most of you will be able to make use of.

I happen to have an early sixties Peugeot PX10 frame set, that I dearly want to restore.  I have straightened the frame set, as best I can, and that includes the main tubes, as well as the stays and rear drops.  Now, I need to turn my attention to the forks.  Will I manage to do a good job.  I certainly hope so but I cannot really say for sure.  In spite of my apparent expertise with metal working, the task is still daunting and I just might have to write this old frame set off.

I do not know if I actually have the skills, and understanding, to properly straighten a frame and/or fork set.  I spent thirty years earning a living as a professional Industrial Mechanic.  During that time, I developed a pretty good understanding of how to properly work with many different metals, in a lot of different situations.  I have little doubt that I have to knowledge to know what needs to be done to straighten a frame set, and more importantly when I SHOULD NOT attempt to do so!  Make sure that you have this same level of understanding of yourself before you take a chance on repairing a damaged frame and fork set.
