VINTAGE ROAD BICYCLE QUALITY - INTRODUCTION

Knowing what makes a good bicycle, good, is fundamentally important, when choosing what kind of vintage road bicycle to seek, restore and ride.  However, finding the right bike means that you must begin by knowing what the right bike looks like.  In my vintage road bicycle selling experiences, and considering the questions would be buyers ask, over and over, it is quite likely that not everyone knows what they are getting into ,when they seek to purchase a vintage road bike.  Some people don't even realize that one bicycle size does not fit all.  I mean no disrespect to anyone for not knowing, this or that.  Neither did I, when I first started collecting and riding these wonderful old bicycles.

So many different old road bicycles have passed through The Old Shed, over the years.  It would be impossible for me to list them all, let alone speak about each.  In my vintage road bicycle collecting efforts, I have run across about a hundred different makes.  Some highly regarded.  Some not.  Though I might have my favourites, I speak neither poorly of any particular brand, nor am I foolish enough to say which is best.

Bicycles are a bit like lovers.  All are wonderful, in their own way.  Some just offer me a much better ride than others.  Just because a bicycle is highly regarded, by those who know the most, means little to me, now that I have had a chance to build and ride, hundreds of vintage road bicycles.  And, the building and riding has afforded me a rare opportunity.  The opportunity to compare...

Though I have never ridden the best of the best, when it comes to vintage road bicycles, I have ridden some pretty nice ones.  I am equally sure that I have not ridden the worst of the worst yet either, though I have swung a leg over a few dogs.  But some of my favourite rides would never qualify as high end collectable vintage road bicycles.  But they are still my favourites, the best example of which is my second from top of the line Canadian made Sekine SHT-270.

With this in mind, I intend to make no effort to suggest that you seek this bike, over that.  These components, as opposed to those.  Italian versus French.  Chrome moly tubing over high tensile.  27" over 700c.  These are all personal choices.  I know what I like and I know, also, that I do not know what you like.

I will offer opinions, pertaining to my interpretation of ride quality, on a variety of bicycles, but remember, they are only my opinions.  I will comment of apparent user friendliness.  Ease of maintenance, will be considered when offering my opinions.  However, I base my opinions on comparison.  Just because I did not like the feel of an early eighties Basso Gap does not mean that it is not a quality bicycle.  It just wasn't for me.  And this brings up a very important point about what kind of a vintage road bicycle you should seek...

I have done my best, to show you how to find an old "Ten Speed".  Now, I suggest that you take the time to get a feel for what you are seeking.  Doing so, will save you lots of money, time, effort and grief.  However, before seeking a bicycle, take a moment to look at You.
