FINDING VINTAGE BICYCLES - INTRODUCTION

There was a time, and not all that long ago, when it was EASY to find vintage road bicycles.  They showed up at local landfill sites by the hundreds each year.  They were frequently offered for free at Yard Sales which, for me, have produced as many as twelve vintage road bicycles, in a single day.  Only the top-of-the-line vintage road bicycles were selling on Ebay, while lesser models were all but ignored by buyers.  In the past few years, all of this has changed and will continue to do so from now on!  The "good old days" of collecting vintage road bicycles, are right now!  There will never be a better opportunity, to find a beautiful vintage road bicycle, than there is today!

The day this early eighties Cambio Rino 2000 showed up at the dump, it was obvious, that the original owner regretted throwing the old steed away.  He gently leaned the bicycle against an already discarded clothes dryer, shook his head and proceeded to toss, with little or no care, his remaining trash, into the scrap metal pile.  The point is, that these old bicycles are still perceived to have inherent value.  Many have been ridden little and then put away, for the bulk of their lonely lives.  Finally (unless you get there first) to be tossed away, frequently with great reluctance, because they were just simply "in the way" for too many years.

The point is this.  Vintage road bicycles are hidden away out there and, my guess is, in great numbers.  More often than not, an old bike is all but forgotten by the owner, until he or she gets sick and tired of moving it out of the way - again!  Bicycles are fairly bulky objects that use up storage space.  Sooner or later, an owner will no longer be able to justify keeping the old bike around anymore.  It will begin its final journey to the bicycle grave yard - the Landfill Site, better known as the Dump.
