KOGA MIYATA BICYCLES - INTRODUCTION

Few people would believe that the famed Miyata bicycle was born in the Netherlands under the name of Koga, that name being born from a combination of two proper names of a husband and wife team.

In 1974 Andries Gaastra left his father's Batavus bicycle company to initiate his own bicycle brand - the Koga.  Marion Kowallik, wife to Andries Gaastra, combined the Ko of her last name with the first two letters of her husbands, hence the new company name - Koga.

Some time later, with the help of the Miyata company, a near hundred old entity that first started in weapons field, the Koga company managed to survive, adding the Miyata name to their product, marking the birth of the Koga Miyata.

At first, only racing bicycles flowed from the Koga Miyata shop, but that would change in 1976 with the addition of a Randoneer range of bicycles, followed ten years later, 1986, with the inclusion of a mountain bicycle line-up.  Finally, in 1994 Miyata hybrid bicycles began to flow from the Koga Miyata shop, completing and rounding out the company's product line-up.

Miyata bicycles were always manufactured from a quality philosophy.  Good quality components, good quality workmanship and high quality standards were paramount to helping the Miyata bicycle grow in popularity.  In today's vintage bicycle world, the Koga Miyata and Miyata are highly sought after machines, some, such as the eighties something Miyata 1000 Grand Touring being among the most desired.
