MASERATI MT-7 - INTRODUCTION
The Maserati name is most commonly
associated with that glorious automobile, introduced by the Maserati
brothers in 1926. Some years later Maserati motorcycles made their
appearance, however, they were Maserati in name only. Evidently
the Maserati company permitted the use of their name, at the time.
This, incidentally, was not an unprecedented move on the part of
Maserati. So too did Rolls Royce allow their prestigious name to be used in
conjunction with the English made Brough Superior motorcycle.
Though volumes of information
pertaining to the Maserati automobile exists, there is little said about
the Maserati bicycle. And the bicycle, like the Motorcycle, is not
associated with the car company. Rather, the Maserati bicycle
effort was linked only to itself.
As
with most brands of bicycles, the Maserati was offered as an entry level
bicycle, fitted with entry level components and a complete lack of
pizzazz. The entry level Maserati, the MT-10, was a cottered
crank, straight gauge high tensile steel recreational machine, at best.
The top Maserati dog, the MT-1, features all of the top of the line
bells and whistles one would expect, from an early seventies high end
Italian made racing bicycle.
The Maserati displayed here is a middle
of the line example of those made and probably of early to mid seventies
vintage. The bike features Campagnolo
forged drops, fitted to a Falk tubing frame set. There is an
abundance of chrome plating, touching the fork blades, stays and even
the head tube lugs. All in all, an attractive, mid to high end
vintage road bicycle.
