FALCON "SINGLE SPEED" - INTRODUCTION

I had wanted to build up a single speed for some time.  I decided to give the project a go, focusing on a mid seventies English Falcon that I had hanging in The Old Shed.  I did toy with the idea of building a fixed gear, since I happened to have found a Phil Wood hub at the "Dump" that would allow for both "Single Speed" freewheel and Fixed Gear applications.  Since I was doing this just for fun, I decided to save the special hub for something else, and perhaps even, as I learned later, someone else.

"Single Speed" conversions are becoming an incredibly popular way to prepare old "Ten Speeds".  The advantages of the "Single Speed" conversion are many, particularly when riding in today's intense traffic conditions are considered.  The bicycles are light, clean in appearance and require less thought to pilot through the city streets.  And they are fun to build and ride.  This I learned from my first "Single Speed" conversion with the Falcon.
