TEAM RALEIGH RECORD - INTRODUCTION

The early seventies, Bike Book surge in bicycle sales,  in North America, was quickly followed with major bicycle manufacturers, setting up shops in countries where large markets existed.  This practice was common in Canada and the US, two very large markets, indeed.  One would ask, why bother?

Domestic bicycle companies, in Canada and the USA, lobbied against the huge numbers of bicycles being imported, to meet the hugely increased demand, at the time.  The lobbying efforts, as might be expected, drew the attention of governments, and huge tariffs were placed on imported bicycles.  The addition of the tariff, made the imported bicycle more expensive to buy than its domestic counterpart.  However..

If a bicycle frame set was imported, in one box and all of the components to go with it, in another and then the two assembled, in Canada or the US, then there would be no tariff.  And, that is how bikes, like this Canadian made Team Raleigh Record came to be.
