THE FIRST GARDIN - INTRODUCTION

Rumour has it that not all Gardin bicycles, and I speak only of the Canadian made mounts not the French, were made equal.  Some Gardin bicycles, such as those that two time Olympic cycling champion Curt Harnett rode in competition or as trainers, were of superb quality.  This Gardin "Special" is one of the better made bicycles to come out of the Gardin factory.

The "Special" was the first higher end Gardin that I had come across.  Lesser mounts are not all that difficult to find and I have owned a few in my time, but never considered including any in my collection.  A gorgeous TNT did find its way into the Old Shed for a time but it was too small to be considered as a keeper.  A near mint 400 also became an inhabitant of the Shed, but it was just not up to the "Special's" quality level, never to have been seriously considered for collection status.

Today, I do have a much nicer Gardin Team Issue and it has been added to my personal collection, though in all honesty the bicycle and I have shared only a ride or two together.  But those first rides were all that were needed to consider replacing the "Special" as a collection bicycle.
