198? GITANE GRAN TOUR - INTRODUCTION

The vintage road bicycle is a pretty nice design and it is loved by many, but not all.  This early eighties made in France Gitane Gran Tour is a good example of the way that many people are building up their vintage road bicycles these days when it comes to customizing vintage road bicycles.

Another bicycle style, if that is even a word that can be used in this instance, is the "Junk Bike", which is a sophisticated version of the "Poor Boy" build that is also common in today's vintage lightweight bicycle world.  The "Poor Boy" is the simplest and least expensive to implement conversion of any when old road bikes are concerned.  The "Junk Bike" suggests a lesser steed than the common "Poor Boy" but nothing could be further from the truth.

Then there is the bicycle built to taste and for specific riding conditions and both can carry equal weight when any customized bicycle is the issue.  Appearance can also be placed high on the "Wish List" when building up something special.  The Gitane falls into this category - a clean and well maintained vintage road bicycle that has been upgraded to suit the rider's preferences, whatever they may be.

The Gitane Gran Tour is a relatively high end touring bicycle.  It is designed for the long haul and carrying heavy loads.  But the "Gran Tour" pictured here targets neither intended use.  The Gitane "Gran Tour" has been customized to accommodate the riding style and interest of a lady who lives in Eastern Canada.  And her intention was to have a vintage road bicycle that offered an assortment of safety and "user friendly" features that were not available at the time of the bicycles manufacture.

The Gitane was custom built for a customer who offered general and sometimes specific build instructions.  The result, a nice light converted road bicycle that looks great and will be considerably easier to use than its original state would have allowed.
